Giving Thanks For Thanksgiving

Dear Thanksgiving,

Just wanted to let you know that, despite the fact that the retail stores and radio stations have forgotten you once again, I have not. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Christmas. It has just become so overwhelmingly materialistic and shoved down my throat the day after Halloween. I think that you serve as a great precursor to being inundated with ho-ho-ho music and people wearing Santa hats. No one should just skip over you, Thanksgiving. We need to remember to give thanks. So when it comes to holidays, please don't feel neglected when you see inflatable Santas and animated Grinches adorning the holiday aisles in stores. At our house, we haven't forgotten you. In fact, we have a playlist of Thanksgiving songs which we enjoy until your day has passed. Here is what we will be listening to until the day after we celebrate the things we're thankful for:

1. Thankful - Josh Groban
2. Thanksgiving Theme - Vince Guaraldi Trio
3. Colors - John McCutcheon
4. Prayer of Thanksgiving - David Tolk
5. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing - MoTab Choir
6. Thanksgiving Day - John McCutcheon
7. Thank U - Alanis Morrissette
8. When Fall Comes to New England - Cheryl Wheeler
9. Take Me Home Country Roads - John Denver
10. Thank You - John Mellencamp
11. Happy Thanksgiving - Debbie Friedman
12. Home - Michael Buble
13. Thanksgiving - George Winston
14. Celebrate Me Home - Kenny Loggins
15. Thanksgiving - Jim Brickman

Hang in there, Thanksgiving. I've got your back.

Sincerely,
Gerb

ahhhh! Finally someone who understands! I shudder when I hear that my friends already have their christmas decorations up. Thanksgiving truly is a great holiday.

Oh I so agree too!!! This past October I went to Cracker Barrel and Big Lots and both had Christmas items mixed in with the Halloween!

Fab. music list! Thanks for posting this. I for one am a home made Christmas gifts person so I start Christmas clear back in July but do enjoy the month of November and Thanksgiving and what it means. With so many children it is hard to go anywhere for Christmas so traveling to see family is Thanksgiving time. Good food, good times, good family, good memories.....I'm grateful for them all.

You know it is really sad that we have to have a holiday to remind us to be grateful in the first place. But what is even more sad is that society tends to skip right over it. What does that say about us?
Poor Thanksgiving. Thanks for giving it the much need thanks it deserves.

Yay! I'm glad someone else cares about Thanksgiving. My birthday often falls on Thanksgiving (or as often as the years align that my birthday and the last Thursday of November are the same), so I kind of feel like Thanksgiving and I are bonded somehow, and it hurts my feelings to see people skip right over it without so much as a backwards glance.

Anna- I know! Put out a cornucopia or something. It's not even snowing yet!

MHS- Some places around here were clearancing the Halloween items the 2nd week of October to make room for the Christmas stuff. Craziness!

Rachel- I know what you mean about traveling at Christmas with lots of kidlets. Thanksgiving is a great time to enjoy food, family, friends and fun. Now, who would want to skip over all of that?!

Natalie- I do what I can... ;)

Amber- Maybe you could add "Happy Birthday" to the playlist?

I love Thanksgiving songs and I love your playlist. Some I haven't heard. I'll have to look them up. Thanks. :)

Great playlist (THANKS so much) and I agree with you completely!

You're not alone! I absolutely love both holidays... but like to celebrate Thanksgiving, FIRST. I'm excited to checkout your playlist. Thanks! :D

I think the problem for me is that one month is not long enough to be in a holly jolly Christmas mood. So I have to start listening to Christmas music in November (or maybe even October), playing Christmas songs on the piano, and thinking about my Christmas cards and gifts before shopping becomes a nightmare in December. And I have to squeeze my extra Christmas time in before December, not after. Once Christmas is over, it's over. Take down that tree, and get the decorations back in storage. And change the playlist. In fact, I believe winter should be gone by early January, altogether. Shoo! Give me spring!

Oops, I just forgot to say anything about Thanksgiving, didn't I? But most of the Thanksgiving songs can be enjoyed year-round, and really, how long can you spend preparing a feast and a gathering of family and friends? Two days in the kitchen seems like plenty to me, I don't want to drag that out any longer.

I love fall - I love the decorations. The things you can set out in October and they go all the way through Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving dinner with friends, with chaos, with rolls literally being "passed" from one end of the table to the next. Our Christmas's are pretty quiet - just our family. The kids playing with their own gifts. Quiet meals that sometimes include my parents - sometimes not. I'm much more of a "come over at 2 for dinner and stay until 10pm playing skipbo" kind of girl. I'm not ready for the greens and reds.

Cari- Enjoy! They're all good ones. And there are plenty more I didn't list, too.

Sarah- You know what they say about great minds...

Corine- I am the same. I love them both, so why skip over Thanksgiving? Enjoy the songs.

Bec- I would argue that you can enjoy Christmas songs all year, too. In fact, I do, when the yearning hits me. I love that Christmas feeling in the air and like to bring it about with Christmas music and even giving gifts randomly throughout the year. I hold no ill feelings towards those who like their 2+ months of Christmas at the end of the year... as long as it's okay for me to wait until after Thanksgiving before diving into all things Christmas. And as far as winter being gone in January... amen, sista!

MnM- First I have to say that I love calling you MnM. It makes me think of the candy. That aside, you sound like my kind of friend. Sometimes I fear that I wear out my welcome when visiting others because I could stay all night!
