Brownie Battles and Destroyed Dreams

Have you ever had something that you’ve just loved? I mean really loved?

When I was growing up, I just couldn’t get enough of these individually wrapped brownies, chocolate-frosted fudge to be exact. I’d stand in line at the student store of my high school for any length of time just to get my hands on one of these waxy delights. I’d even pay the fifty cents to get it…sometimes I'd buy three or four of them.

Knock-offs and look-alikes were never a satisfactory substitute either, they had to be the Plantation Chocolate Fudge - or Plantation Chocolate Fudge with a layer of whipped marshmallow nestled underneath the coating of chocolaty-frosting goodness.

Mouthwatering.

Can you even begin to fathom the beauty of a sunrise as seen from the other side of the world? Of the splendor in the delicate strains of angels singing praises from the lofty heavens over something so delicious and beautiful? Perhaps even imagine the glorious thrill at such a sprinkling of goodness in a world filled with lame sauce?

Well if you can, then you can probably also visualize the horror of the day when the gods of deliciousness turned their backs upon me, and the production of this little delight ceased.

I was devastated.

From what I gathered through the grapevine, it was that those dratted little Keebler elves. With their corporate conglomerate and bags of money, they bought out Sunshine (and the sunshine of my heart) that in actuality owned the Plantation Corporation. Sadly, it wasn’t long thereafter that old Tony the Tiger himself and his thugs at Kellogg decided to buy out Keebler. I’m pretty sure that it was Tony who made the final decision that the Plantation Brownie just wasn’t worth it - probably with the help of Snap, Crackle, and Pop. Those little…well, whatever they really are—production of this little delight stopped and a little piece of my soul died that day.

I still can’t eat Frosted Flakes.

Curses. Curses. Curses to all those companies run by banished house-elves and talking tigers that have inferiority complexes and continually bemoan just how grrreeeaaaat they are because of it.

I lost all hope of being united with my scrumptious little delight ever again.

Then—quite unbelievably—something magical happened. From what I understand, Mrs. Freshley has now thundered into the brownie arena, and has decided to work some magic of her own. Of course, I don’t know if these new brownies are any bit as good as the Plantation brand was, but rumor has it that they are.

Dreams really do come true.

It’s just too bad that shipping for one from California is nearly $14.00

Maybe the Plantation Brownie wasn't quite as good as I remembered it anyhow…

I had a similar situation when they stopped making Wavy Gravy Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Don't let the gravy name fool you, it was the best ever!

SOB!

I can't eat Frosted Flakes either but that has to do with an unfortunate morning sickness experience.

$14.00??? Is that for a CASE of them or just one?

You can get a pack of 8 Mrs. Freshley's brownies at the Dollar Tree in East Bay.

You're welcome.

I know someone who is going to California soon.... I bet if you were really, really, nice to them they may take some time away from playing with Mickey to look for them and bring some back for the bargain price of FREE! I'm just saying....
(Niceness may include the secret to and use of sparkles. ;)

You've just inspired me to try and find "razzles". Remember them? My absolute childhood fave.

And I say, It's worth the 14 bucks, just for the nostalgia it'll bring back.

They're probably not as good as you remember. When we're kids and don't have much to compare it to, then, yeah..... but now, you've have homemade brownies that would win hands down. I know this for a fact.

And to think....you were just down in CA.....CURSES!

I hate it when that happens. I think every company should put out a notice when they are going to cease making a product so we can stock up. That is what food storage should be about.

I used to eat those Hostess Cherry Pies in the paper wrapper and coated in some chemically produced faux icing...loved those things. I'd even freeze them and eat them. It makes me ill now to even think of it :)

Why are those other snack cakes called Ding Dongs in the South, but King Dons in the Northeast? Or is it the other way around?

Also, California? In N Out, please. Thanks.

I think I've seen the Mrs. Fresheys...I'll keep my eyes open and ship some to you if I find them. A guy should never have to do without his favorite processed chocolate treat.

and Leslie...they're definitely Ding Dongs here in the South. ;)

Chrissy, I've never had this second one, but the Plantation? Heaven.

BTW, they were sold at gas stations…

Linn - That is for just one. I doubt they taste as good as it would cost to ship the sucker.

Kelly - Yeah, the name sounds kind of gross.

PMC -I really should, shouldn't I?

Shanna - Just the one…

Gerb - I'll have to check that out; however, it makes me wonder just how good they really are.

Natalie - Sparkles are good.

Empress - I've heard of them, mostly because of 13 going on 30.

Janelle - Yeah, those homemade types are good…I just need some more for comparison.

Rachel - Yeah, it would have been easier.

Tammy - That would be a good idea…

Gigi - I used to swap my apple at lunch for my friend's lemon pie…LOVED those.

Leslie - No idea…Hostess, right?

Lori - Since I've never had Mrs. Freshey's brownies before, they might not be my favorites after all...

Mrs. Freshley's is a sad substitute for Little Debbie (LD cosmic brownies are pretty good). I have never seen a packaged brownie with a marshmallow layer, so your dream may just be gone for good along with that Plantation brand name. Better stick with the Reeses - you're safe there.

$14 for shipping for a 69 cent brownie??!!?? That is crazy.

I heard that Snap, Crackle and Pop run a dog fighting club that used to be run by Michael Vick. And Tony the Tiger has 3 illegitimate kids with Little Debbie and the Sunmaid raisin girl.

Shannon - You're probably right, Reese's are FAR superior…but in a different way. I plan to keep my eye out though, just in case.

PTM - I'd always suspected about that little group...

WOW! Well, my name is Steve and I am the son of the founder of Plantation Baking Company. My dad and uncle started Planation. The short story... We sold Plantation in 1986 to a holding company, who in turn sold it to a Taiwanese company along with several other bakeries that were packaged together. After President Enterprises of Taiwan buried the entire $500,000,000 bakery group they sold it to Keebler. Keebler was bought out by Kellogg. During all theses transitions all the companies in this group suffered greatly. Plantation was a wonderful company with American story behind it. Going back to the 1920's when my grandfather came over from Poland and became a bread baker... Plantation is now gone. I do have one brownie left in my freezer! never to be eaten. It was destroyed by a big company mentality. I miss it very much and wish we never sold it. I have all the recipes and would love to make them again some day. Who know... Anyway the Mrs. Freshley brownie is baked by Flowers Baking Company. They bought a small brownies company back int he 70's called Vann's Baking Company. They were in Crossville, TN. Flowers bought them because we would not sell our company to them at that time. Vann's actually had a darn good brownie. Not to good any more! There truly are NO good brownies in the market place today. So that is the short version. Thank you all for thinking about our brownies and how much you enjoyed them. I will be sure to share this with my dad. My uncle passed away a few years ago unfortunately. God Bless, Steve K.

Steve,

I am so sorry that your company had to suffer at the hands of others that were far more powerful...just so you know, they became a wonderful part of my childhood.

I hope you do get to make them again one day; if you do, I'll be ready to support you 100% again.

Steve, I so would love to have a copy of the brownie recipe, at least we could make them at home. Still hoping they go back in production one day soon.
