I woke up this morning feeling sick—of course, this probably shouldn’t be a surprise when I went to bed that way, too.
I thought about today being my day to post here at Four Perspectives, and I immediately felt overwhelmed at the prospect—especially when I felt as awful as I did. Of course, it doesn’t help when one finds himself totally uninspired as well in regards to a topic. These are two deadly combinations for a blogger with a self-assigned deadline—usually 8:00 A.M.
So I thought I’d write today about being ill, about not feeling so great, and about the hardship of sickness—well, sort of.
You see, I recalled a good friend of mine a few years ago saying that she hated being sick; that being sick was the end-all be-all of horribleness. Of course when she said this, I immediately realized that she and I didn’t quite see sickness in quite the same way. “I like to get sick,” I said when she’d finished.
“What?” was her reply. “Why in the world would you like being sick?”
“Because being sick makes me appreciate when I feel well,” was my answer.
Today, in not feeling quite so well, I am again reminded that there are so many times over the past year or so when I haven’t found myself truly grateful for those days when I am not sick. It seems that I have taken these moments for granted—squandered away without the true appreciation and gratitude of the ‘not sickness.’
In fact, I am just starting to feel much better than I had over the past twelve hours, and I find myself again grateful for the moments when I am not physically weak, dizzy, or vomiting. There’s something to be said for those ‘non-ill’ moments of our varied lives. So, for today, I find myself grateful—grateful for the privilege of being sick.

your a bigger man than me! ;)
Great perspective. One I need to be reminded of often.
As much as you're grateful for being sick, I hope you're feeling better soon.
Living in a house full of men, being sick also means life still goes on no matter what but heaven help me whenever one of them gets sick. I hope that you are feeling better soon. It's not a great way to spend your Christmas break :o(
This post can be looked at several ways. There is a lot of "sickness" out there. Either way, being sick does make you appreciate the good days and the good times.
Having a chronic illness....makes me appreciate the good days far more then I did when I had all the energy in the world. Now on days when I'm feeling great which actually translates to about 1/4 of a tank compared to what I used to.....I am so grateful for those days and what I am able to fill them with.
Life is good. 'Live' it!
P.S. You've obviously never been pregnant.....you'd take back that "I like getting sick" comment. :D
P.P.S. For those of us who can't seem to get away from being sick and are tired of being sick...I am grateful for the knowledge that someday.....I'll run again. In the meantime, I can still run and dance inside.
P.P.P.S. Amen Momma Has Spoken. Amen sister!!
Here's to being sick!
Hope you are feeling your normal self soon. :) What a way to spend a vacation. :(
Attitude is everything. You've always been a good example of positive thinking for me. :)
I hope you're feeling better soon!
Mist - I hope so...however, I guess you are a 'woo' man.
Gerb - I feel much better, to be honest. Thanks though.
Bonnie - Life does indeed go on, doesn't it? Just to let you know, I am feeling much better now - and I appreciate it, too.
Rachel - That's true. I have felt ill on more than one occasion. I tend to appreciate those times away from it even more. As for being pregnant...I think that goes without saying.
Natalie - I ventured into the school today for a few minutes to get some things ready for Monday. Heaven knows that I'll have to head in again in the next day or two.
Linn - The only thing I can control is the attitude about it, right?
Cari - I'd best do my best to keep up 'the front' then. Once-again, happy birthday!
I was going to post nearly the same thing about having a tooth pulled, but it's not always easy. Great post, glad you are feeling better and glad you like being sick, I'll bet you're around enough sick germs every day to appreciate being well!
