I am not a fan of cats.
Don't get me wrong. If you are a cat-lover, we can all still be friends. I have no problem with others' pet preferences, but to me cats seem to have an air of arrogance that I just cannot tolerate. They laze about doing what they want, when they want and seem to enjoy napping more than anything.
Today I was surrounded by chaos. I was ready to pull my hair out. My second batch of dough for holiday cookies was mixing, my clothes dryer had broken and my kids were into everything imaginable. I put the dough into the refrigerator, draped sheets and blankets over doors to finish drying and got down on the floor to pick up the Legos that were strewn from here to infinity.
As I sat there on the floor, my foot became warm. I looked and realized that it was caught in a sunny patch of carpet and I moved my entire self into the sun's pathway, allowing it to warm my legs, my arms, my face. Oh, heaven, did it feel wonderful.
I woke up awhile later to the sound of my telephone. I had fallen asleep? In the middle of the floor? I had let the sun overtake me and dozed as it warmed and energized me. That was when it hit me... how much like a cat I was just then, lazing about in the sun's rays right in the middle of a mess of Legos and the incessant chatter of toddlers vying for a turn on the computer.
Right then, it was like nothing else was important. That little siesta was all about me. I felt a bit... what's the word? Arrogant? And I liked it.
I suppose it just goes to show you that even with our differences we can learn to appreciate the things we share in common with those we don't like much.
As much as I hate to admit it, I loved my afternoon catnap, basking in that little spot of sunshine as the chaos continued all around me.
But I'll still never own a cat.

You're speaking my language, Gerb! :)
I have two cats - and they live OUTSIDE, that's the way I like it. But sometimes, when Noah leaves the door cracked, they sneak in and I find them curled up on someone's bed and I get a teeny tiny bit jealous. Of the CAT! So I totally understand and LOVE the idea of a cat nap in the sun.
Oh, and Gerb, I'm sure you deserved your little siesta... :)
Naps are the best...especially on Sunday afternoon!!!! Aaaahhhhhh!
Being allergic to cats makes it a bit harder to like them; additionally, they shed far too much for my taste.
Glad you were able to get a bit of a nap squeezed in your day...
There is nothing grosser than to see someone dressed nicely, then with a closer look find them to be covered in cat hair. (OK. Maybe someone dressed NOT nicely with cat hair all over them.)
Oh Gerb, we've already had this conversation, so I won't go into the whole cat thing again. I will say however, that I am so jealous of your sunny catnap today. It really sounds heavenly. Arrogant or not, you definitely deserved it.
And perhaps, you and Tiger could get along after all...
All I can think is that you must have been really tired to have fallen asleep on the floor with kids into everything and chaos all around!
I'm glad it happened . . .
and that your house was still standing when you woke up.
Bec- You sleep in the sunspots on your carpet, too? ;)
Sarah- I kept telling myself I deserved it but it was hard to want to do it again while cleaning the disasters which occurred during it. (Did that even make sense?)
GaeLynn- Sunday naps are awesome. Especially when they are followed by treats from the neighbors. Ahhhhhh!
T5th- The fact that cats shed is another testament to the fact that they are annoying. But they know what they're doing when it comes to naps.
Gina- A.M.E.N!! Dog hair ranks right up there, too. Remind me to tell you the story sometime of the lady I visited every month and her pets...
Natalie- Find yourself a sunbeam and go nap in it. You can thank me later.
Anaise- I am always tired, it seems. Only not so much at bedtime. I need to get myself figured out so my body & my mind are coordinated.
Naps are the best. Your description made me want to take one right now but sadly I will have to wait another hour or so. Sigh.
Lars- Agreed. Naps are a bit of heaven - even when surrounded by chaos. I hope you got a little catnap squeezed in. They sure are energizing!
Hi Gerb! I too, once said I would never own a cat. Actually, I'm allergic to cats, can't stand their stupidity (and all the disobedience etc that goes with that), their shedding fur, smell, litter box, etc! etc! (though I have never thought of them as arrogant). However, I have actually allowed my kids to have a cat, and as long as he stays away from my face, I am amazed at how much I am learning to like him! His fur is so soft and... I know there were some other things I have noticed and liked about him - what were they? LOL - Oh well! Watching him unravel the toilet paper, knock over the bird cage, and get into everything else he can manage to reach (which is just about everything!) is highly entertaining! :D Here's to appreciating EVERYTHING! :D
