The Drawer of Awesomeness

There is a wondrous drawer in my kitchen. In fact, I’m pretty sure that you have one, too. It is a veritable trove of wonders of which MacGyver would most certainly be proud (cue music). And the funny thing is, I remember there being one of these drawers in every house we lived in while I was growing up. Yes my friends, today I speak of the well-known junk drawer.

It’s funny that often we have no idea how this particular drawer came to be the final resting place for all of the varied odd and ends in our homes; however, it did. Like a self-sufficient village in the deepest jungles of the Serengeti, the junk drawer is the place to find just about anything one might need. In fact, if there were an emergency, all I’d have to do is empty this drawer into my backpack and I could probably combat just about anything.

For instance, if I were in need of water-cleansing packets or safety pins, the obvious first place to look for these treasures would be the junk drawer.

A pen? I’d check the drawer before I’d search my office desk.

Glue? Stamps? Sticky Notes? Scissors? Push pins? Band-Aids? Gum? Batteries? Cough drops? Dental floss? Salt packets? Contact lenses? Extra buttons? A token for a car wash in Nebraska?

All of these items—plus a smorgasbord of others—could all be found in the junk drawer.

In fact whenever I have need of just about anything, I’ll check the junk drawer before anyplace else; 9 times out of 10, this drawer provides me with the items I need the moment I require them.

The funny thing is that for many of these items, I cannot remember having ever put them in the drawer in the first place. This causes me to conclude that this astonishing catchment isn’t a ‘junk’ drawer at all—but it is instead a magical box. In many senses, it’s similar the Room of Requirement in the Harry Potter books; it has in it all the things that the user desires and is in need of the most. Perhaps they came into existence when when the knick-knack fairy was ground into fine powder and scattered by the winds of chaos.

Nobody can really be sure.

So there you have it: the drawer of surprises, the holder of treasures, the catchment of the little things we cannot live without, or the junk drawer. Whatever you call it, it’s still the little magical place that makes life so much easier for us all.

I don’t know what I’d do without it.

Oh yes, the junk drawer, garage and cupboards and the list goes on! All that came to an end when we downsized. I am officially junk drawer free!

Some peoples minds are like this junk drawer. They hold a treasure trove of what they call "useless" information. For me, I just stare at them and wonder how in the world they can remember all that stuff as I can't seem to remember if I'm going up the stairs or down the stairs.

It seems to me that your drawer holds some valuable stuff. When we moved (5 years ago) I dumped all of the junk drawer crap into a box...I have yet to open that box. Throwing it away is out of the question. You never know. Of course I now have another junk drawer...or two...or three...

It's incredible how much better junk looks when you put a magical spin on it! I feel so much better about my own junk drawer(s) now. Thanks.
BTW- Who knew the junk drawer would have a great post in it too?!

Ha ha! This is fantastic. It drives my wife crazy when I say, "Where are the scissors?" and she ALWAYS says, "where they always are... the junk drawer".

Junk drawers rock. Btw - you better eat those Poprocks soon, because if you let them sit around too long, they lose their fizzle and get all nasty.

Found a wet diaper in mine the other day, laying along side a shoelace and some nail polish.
Awkward....

I have three junk drawers, several junk baskets AND a junk cabinet. That's just the kitchen, we won't talk about the garage, my desk and bathrooms.......

We have 1 small one. I have determined that the junk drawer will hold as much as there is space to put inside. I do NOT want a large group of ungrouped things.. so we have a small drawer.

A screwdriver or two, thumbtacks, twist-ties from bread loaves, a few batteries, picture hanging supplies, garden seeds... nothing scary.

Soo...what does it mean when every drawer in your house is a junk drawer?

I'm kinda afraid of the answer to that.

Like Shannon, what stuck out to me most was the poprocks. Not that I was being nosy. But those are AWESOME in case of an emergency!

I don't have a junk drawer either. Only 400 square feet in my condo and one kitchen drawer. I use it for things like silverware. And that's all. I think I will start calling it the magical box of silver though. That'll make dining a little more exciting.

I can't agree with you guys more. I love this sacred place of stuff…of course, mine is now reached the breaking point and I don't know if I want to allow it to take over yet another drawer (sorry, E, I just can't let that happen).

hey! thanks for visiting my blog!
I love my junk drawer. Always had one growing up, and of course, started my very own with the first apt I had. 20 yrs and at least half that many moves later..still got it! Altho, I don't think that when I get married in 2 weeks, my junk draw stuff will fit in to his junk drawer. I may have to seek out a seperate one of my own at his house! LOL

I don't know what my 5 year old son would do for fun if we didn't have one of those. AND I also wonder where all the key come from. Seriously...I am always finding keys in there that I have NO CLUE what they go to and where they came from. Treasures indeed!

Wouldn't it be nice if builders just BUILT a drawer in each house and labeled it The Junk Drawer? Make it soo much easier, I think!

Funny...my drawer looks much the same, minus the Pop Rocks. I even have the same battery charger, although I couldn't tell you what it goes to. I also have a junk basket that sits beside my corner of the sofa...in it rests the card reader for my camera, nail clippers, pens, stamps, an envelope or two, a book, remotes, assorted earrings, chapsticks, a notepad, and all sorts of other things I don't recall right now. I love junk storage. :)

Every member of our family is entitled to ONE junk drawer. This has been very helpful when cleaning or putting things away, and when my husband or son doesn't know where something goes, they know they can stash it in their "Drawer of Requirement" (love it!) and Mom will never get mad!!

My junk drawer, by the way, doesn't have junk in it, only rarely used treasures.
