The Power of Music

Pin It My littlest kids were watching Pooh's Grand Adventure yesterday.

I have actually never had the pleasure of sitting down and watching this particular movie with them or of hearing any of the soundtrack for that matter. I'm not sure how I've gotten away with this for so long, but yesterday it finally caught up with me and as I stood in the kitchen fixing lunch, I heard the lyrics to this song.

I'm not going to lie to you. It totally made me cry. Not a sobbing, audible sort of cry, but tears were present nonetheless.

I tried to reason with myself.

Gerb, seriously, Winnie the Pooh?

I know! You're preaching to the choir here. It's humiliating.

What exactly is it about a cartoony song that could possibly make you cry?

So I thought about it. And here's the thing... music gets to me. Sometimes it's the lyrics, sometimes it's the melody or the way someone knows how to make a guitar sing to my soul. It can be the beautiful combination of certain notes which strikes a chord somewhere inside of me when I hear them. It is almost as if music opens up a sixth sense somewhere - an untapped reservoir of memories and emotions which only responds to a beautiful blending of words or specific cadence of sound.

I suppose you could say that if feelings were audible, they would sound like music. Music is a sort of foreign language with varying dialects which are only understood by those who have been immersed in them and lived among them.

I don't know... my words seem convoluted and insufficient.

I guess that what I'm trying to express here is that music has an unexplainable power over the part of my mind which determines how I will react to things.

Including songs sung by a silly old bear.

Ditto. Amen. & any other word that means I whole heartedly understand & agree.

I could never express what music does and means to me better than you did here. Thanks.

I'm in Panera Bread and reading your post (can you tell I spend a leeetle too much time on zee compooter?) and because I don't want to subject all of these delightful LU students to Winnie the Pooh, I looked the lyrics up and read them. I think we have kind of an accidental theme going on for this week--those maudlin, silly, sentimental, days-gone-by things that just make us tear up a bit and be thankful for the past.

I'm feeling it.

I love this song! I sing it to my kids all of the time.

Music is powerful. There is no doubt about it. I tell my kids all of the time about the power of music for good.......and for e.v.i.l. because it is so moving. Songs I've not heard in years when heard now can bring up the emotions I had at the time I first heard or was moved by a song. Both good or rebellious I'm afraid.

Music will move me far more than anything else.

That is too sweet. I have never heard that song before. I la-la-love it. My little guy has a bear that he adores. He just calls it "bear." A boy. A bear. Forever. I like that idea.

-love it! :) So true. So true! BTY - My kids were Pooh addicts when they were little (esp the twins, who were so cute, and so quiet, and now they are 15 and sometimes totally obnoxious!! But that's besides the point... I just can't help not reminiscing!)

As I was saying, my kids were Pooh addicts, and so I have seen them ALL. And I love them all! This song is one of my favorites. :) And, they make me cry too, and I'm NOT EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT IT! ;) It really is the music!

Oh - and I agree with Rachael's statement as well (and them all, really); music is so powerful - for good or for evil; thus, I'm really particular about what I listen to.

PS. Thanks for reminding me of Pooh days with my kids! :)

It's rather entertaining to listen to music with my husband. He hears a song and he hears the beat, or he like the chorus. When I hear a song, I analyze it and digest it and disect it. Music can truly share messages of hope, despair, fear, love, or joy! I love how messages of that nature and how they can be conveyed to so many people!

I love the Kenny Loggins song, "Your Heart will Lead You Home" from...I think it was The Tigger Movie.
