Just Lovely...

I entered the grocery store to purchase a few odds and ends on my way home. I’d been listening to movies on my iPod while I was running errands, most especially a few British films, and words and phrases were flitting about my head as I moved to the checkstand at the local grocery.

Barmy, bloody, brilliant, dodgy, quid, smashing…

“Would you like your eggs in a bag?” the cashier asked as I swiped my debit card through the reader.

“Yes, that would be lovely,” I responded distractedly, still listening to About a Boy through one earbud.

A moment later, a sudden realization of horror stole through me as I realized what I’d just said. I began to backpedal and explain why I’d just used that particular choice of words.

“I was just listening to a British film on my iPod,” I said pitifully, hoping this would explain everything. “I don’t usually use the word ‘lovely’ when I talk.”

The cashier smiled as she put my items in a plastic bag and handed them to me. The people behind me in line began laughing. “I’m sure you were,” she said with a wink. “You have yourself a lovely day, sir.”

Oh, that was some bloody brilliant backpedaling, boyo. You're too funny. I love that movie, btw. Hugh Grant, too, in spite of myself.

Okay...I'm beginning to wonder about you, TF...Between this and that first list of favorites a few days ago... JK
I do the same thing though. Give me a good british movie (esp. those that include bonnets) and I start speaking like a Brit, give me a southern drawl flick and I turn into Scarlet O'Hara.
But to hear you say, "That would be lovely."...I would have given anything to see that cashier's face!
Thanks for the jolly good laugh!

See, I would have just smiled at her and left the statement as is. That way, when you left, you gave her something funny to remember you by. Instead you left her with something hilarous!

I now have "Silent Sigh" by Badly Drawn Boy stuck in my head just by the thought of that movie. Thanks for the chuckle! Cheerio.

Better you said lovely rather than smashing! Don't forget gorgeous. I always crack up when something like a day at the park would be just gorgeous!

Besides......what's wrong with lovely?

I had to back pedal to see what you wrote that you had said that was so odd. I guess I grew up hearing that said so casually that I read it without a thought of who was saying it.

Had I been distracted by a movie playing in my ear rather than a passel of children I would have responded in like fashion which would have been odd... since normally I opt to not bag my eggs but keep them safely out of the bottom of my cart.

Lori -Sometimes a guy's gotta do what he's gotta do. Just for the record, that movie is in my top 10.

Natalie - Isn't it amazing just how we will sometimes slip into lines we hear from songs or movies?

Mist - I won't lie, I have often wished that I had an English accent...

Cari - Thanks for stopping by. Glad you got a smile.

Bonnie - I should have, but for some reason I felt inclined to explain.

Lars - I love that song. In fact, I really enjoy listening to the entire soundtrack.

Rachel - Smashing...now THAT would have been classic! Of course, we were talking about eggs, weren't we?

Linn - That gave me a smile.

Nova - So far, I've been lucky. I guess you haven't had the same luck?

I will never hear the words, "Killing Me Softly" without smiling again.

: )

S - "And there I was killing them softly with my song. Or rather being killed. And not so softly either."

Love the movie.
