Who Are You?

A weed cannot stop being a weed

It is simply what it is destined to become.

A thistle cannot become a rose.

A skunk cabbage cannot change to a rhubarb plant.

They are what they are.

I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit lately, and how we cannot alter the fact that we are human beings; we cannot change that we are people any more than any other creature can change its species or genome.

There is something that we can change, though. We can change our nature. We can alter the decisions we choose to make from day to day…we can decide how to treat others around us.

There is nobody that controls our destiny.

We are whom we decide to become.

Who are you today?

We do have control over ourselves- but not total.. because if we did have total control then everyone would have their own 'perfect' world...As far as today, I take each day as they come.. Dealing w/son issues is a day to day event.. just as my contentment and happiness is.

I'm a zombie. Seriously! Lack of sleep will do that to a person.

Just finished reading, "The Seventeen Second Miracle". It's a quick read in a day book but is really good and goes along with your post today.

I've been struggling so much with who I am and who I want to be that I can't even figure out an adequate comment to this post.

Today I feel exactly as Karen described.

@Karen, I love your honesty.

@TF, So that's why the rose has thorns! They're leftovers from changing from being a thistle!? ;)

Great post. It made me think. I love "thinking posts".

Wonderful post. Today, I am one amazing person who sometimes loses herself in the shuffle of life.... but at other times.... I truly find myself and it's so freeing. :)

You are good. You made me think and at the end of the day, that's tough! I like the line about "There is nobody that controls our destiny."

Ah, KBF...we cannot control everything, it's true, but what can we control? What can we change? How can we choose to see things?

Is it a perfect world? Heck no. But can I choose to make it a bit better in parts? Heck yes.

R - Choosing to be a zombie could be a good choice...minus the eating of brains.

K - In the words of Dr. Leo Marvin from What About Bob, "Baby Steps."

J - I think that everyone has those days at times, it's all a matter (for me) to not allow those days to completely take me over. But they do try...

N - I think there's a Poison song that tells all about roses and thorns.

J - Here's to being found.

HI - Thanks for coming by, and thanks for letting me know you did. I'll be honest that at times I want someone to blame for my faults, shortcomings, problems, whatever...but when I really stop to think about it, I'm the only one who can even remotely try to get myself out of those slumps when they happen. If I allow myself to wallow, I will do just that.
